Published: 2004-11-04

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- The North American Orthodox-Catholic Theological Consultation continued its study of the different views of primacy and conciliarity in Catholic and Orthodox churches during an Oct. 21-23 meeting at St. Paul's College in Washington. Catholic Archbishop Daniel E. Pilarczyk of Cincinnati and Greek Orthodox Metropolitan Maximos of Pittsburgh co-chaired the meeting, the 67th since the consultation was formed in 1965. The participants discussed several papers on different aspects of primacy, conciliarity and their role in church governance and unity. Consultation participants also discussed recent developments in their churches including the planned new ecumenical forum, Christian Churches Together in the USA, which is to include U.S. Catholic and Orthodox churches as members. Sponsors of the consultation are the Standing Conference of Canonical Orthodox Bishops in the Americas, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Committee on Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
