ALEXANDRIA, Va. (CNS) -- Catholic Charities USA has received the largest grant ever for its National Housing Counseling Program, the agency announced Nov. 1. The $1.97 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will fund the housing counseling programs of 40 local Catholic Charities agencies. Those programs include counseling people before they rent houses or search for homes to buy as well as providing education in fair housing standards, money management, and housing care and maintenance. Catholic Charities has directed the multiagency housing counseling program for nearly 10 years, during which more than 21,000 people have been assisted. Of those, nearly 1,700 were able to buy a home for the first time, Catholic Charities said in a press release.
