Social justice workers say more needs to be done worldwide

Published: 2004-10-28

ROME (CNS) -- Catholics are at the forefront of trying to bring about social justice worldwide, but much more needs to be done, said justice workers gathered in Rome. More than 300 representatives of organizations working for social justice met to discuss the role of Catholics in a world marked by poverty and violence, newly challenged by globalization and horrified by terrorism. It was the first time the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace had brought together the social justice workers -- including lay Catholics, bishops, priests and religious -- to discuss their mission and ways to meet the difficulties specific to today's world. Participants from 92 countries attended the Oct. 27-30 meeting. Cardinal Angelo Sodano, Vatican secretary of state, praised participants for their work and told them to continue with increased vigor because the "sick world" described in the 1967 encyclical, "Populorum Progressio," had gotten worse.
