Published: 2004-10-28
UNITED NATIONS (CNS) -- Archbishop Celestino Migliore, Vatican nuncio to the United Nations, appealed Oct. 27 for the nations of the world to show a "political will" for peace. Addressing the General Assembly at U.N. headquarters in New York, he said political will would enable the moral resources of nations to transform civilizations so they would "learn to treasure life and promote peace." The nuncio spoke to a session of the General Assembly dealing with the theme of a "culture of peace," following up on the United Nations' designation of the millennial year as the International Year for the Culture of Peace and 2001-2010 as the International Decade for a Culture of Peace. Archbishop Migliore said the Vatican wished to use the occasion to "reiterate its confidence in the United Nations as one of the key institutions at mankind's disposal for the spread of a culture of peace."
