ROMEOVILLE, Ill. (CNS) -- Mary Breslin, editor and general manager of the Catholic Explorer, newspaper of the Diocese of Joliet, was honored by Lewis University in Romeoville for outstanding community, civic or religious service. Christian Brother James Gaffney, university president, presented the De La Salle Award to Breslin and seven others Oct. 17. The award is named for St. John Baptist de la Salle, the patron saint of teachers and founder of the university's sponsoring order, the De La Salle Christian Brothers. Recipients are honored for their character, culture and compassion. In accepting her award, Breslin complimented the Christian Brothers for their fine work in educating her father at St. Mel High School in Chicago and her two daughters at Montini Catholic High School in Lombard. She said she attempts to pattern her work on the values they learned in Christian Brothers' educational institutions -- academic excellence, strong leadership, ethics, integrity and service. She is a member of St. Alexander Parish in Villa Park.
