Fight against poverty needs greater funding, Vatican official says
Published: 2004-09-21
VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- More funding is needed in the global fight against hunger and poverty, the Vatican's secretary of state told world leaders at the United Nations. Cardinal Angelo Sodano told the gathering that there is a "lack of sufficient funds for a worldwide food security program to make headway." A copy of his speech was released Sept. 21 by the Vatican. In a separate ceremony the same day, Cardinal Sodano was presented with the 2004 Path to Peace Award. The award is presented annually by the Path to Peace Foundation, an agency headed by the Vatican's nuncio to the United Nations. Also honored with the foundation's Servitor Pacis Award was Archbishop Michael Courtney, the former papal nuncio to Burundi who was killed in an ambush Dec. 29 near the capital, Bujumbura.
