Diocese settles dispute over building construction near cathedral

Published: 2004-09-13

PITTSBURGH (CNS) -- The Diocese of Pittsburgh settled a dispute with a local developer and construction company Sept. 9 over excavations for a new office building that the diocese said had damaged St. Paul Cathedral nearby. TEDCO Construction, general contractor for the six-story office building under construction across the street from the Pittsburgh cathedral, and The Elmhurst Group agreed to use low-impact excavation equipment on the project. Common Pleas Judge Michael A. Della Vecchia had granted the diocese's request for an injunction to halt the construction work Sept. 8 after two cathedral entrances had to be closed because of loose masonry and a cathedral tower was found to be leaning. "The Diocese of Pittsburgh is pleased that all parties were able to come to an agreement that protects the public safety and guards against further damage to the cathedral," said a statement from the diocese.
