COLCHESTER, Vt. (CNS) -- Brian Lacey, a 1972 graduate of St. Michael's College in Colchester, has honored the teacher who most influenced his life with a $1.1 million pledge to endow the college's Henry G. Fairbanks chair for the humanities. Lacey, an American studies major who was St. Michael's first Rhodes Scholar nominee and who became a finalist for that honor, said the newly established chair "helps connect past generations of college graduates to future generations of students and will help remind us that one teacher can make a difference." Fairbanks, who founded the St. Michael's humanities program, was a popular professor at the college, where he taught from 1946 to 1981. He also was one of the founders of the St. Michael's Playhouse and the Vermont Academy of Arts and Letters. Lacey, who earned a master's degree in literature from Clark University after graduating from St. Michael's, is active in worldwide television marketing, production and distribution.
