DAVENPORT, Iowa (CNS) -- The Rev. Arthur Simon, a Lutheran minister, author and founder of Bread for the World, will receive the Davenport Diocese's Pacem in Terris Peace and Freedom Award Nov. 10 at St. Ambrose University in Davenport. The award, begun in the diocese in 1964, is named after Pope John XXIII's encyclical, "Pacem in Terris" ("Peace on Earth"), which calls on all people to "secure peace among the nations." Previous award recipients include the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Dorothy Day, Blessed Mother Teresa, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Cesar Chavez and Lech Walesa. In a congratulatory letter to Rev. Simon, Davenport Bishop William E. Franklin wrote that the award "recognizes your dedication to the cause of ending world hunger, your passion for social and economic justice and your commitment to finding solutions to the causes of poverty and hunger around the world." The bishop added, "For at least the past 35 years, you have labored for justice as you have dedicated your life to the values, vision and mission described in 'Pacem in Terris.'"
