Maryknoll sponsors student essay contest on integrating faith, life

Published: 2004-09-03

MARYKNOLL, N.Y. (CNS) -- The theme for the 2004 Maryknoll student essay contest is "Standing Up, Speaking Out," which aims to highlight the faith of sixth- through 12th-grade students and how they integrate Jesus' teachings into their lives. Maryknoll Father Joseph R. Veneroso, publisher of Maryknoll magazine, said in a press release, "Through our essay contest, we hope to encourage young people to make the world a better place by speaking out when they see something which is not fair or right." For the contest, students are asked to write essays of 500-750 words describing a true experience when they or someone they know stood up for fairness and justice. First prizes of $1,000 will be given in two divisions: for grades six-eight and for grades 9-12. Second prizes of $300 and third prizes of $150 also will be awarded in each division. The deadline for entries is Dec. 1. Winners will be announced in February. First-place essays will be published in the May/June 2005 issue of Maryknoll magazine and on the Maryknoll Web site, www.maryknoll.org, which also contains contest rules and instructions for students.
