Oregon parish has education from kindergarten to college covered

PORTLAND, Ore. (CNS) -- A Portland parish, North Portland Catholic Community, has Catholic schooling covered from kindergarten to master's degrees. A Catholic grade school, high school and university are all within the parish's boundaries. And a web of connections seems to benefit Holy Cross Elementary School, De La Salle North Catholic High, the University of Portland and the parish. For example, the university's education department sends student teachers to Holy Cross and De La Salle and experienced faculty guide the teacher trainees in the classrooms. Educators from the University of Portland, which is run by the Holy Cross Fathers, also helped develop curriculum at De La Salle. Once each year, student nurses from the university volunteer at Holy Cross. And the Holy Cross eighth graders attend a summer session at the university. The Holy Cross principal and the university's dean of education have both served on the De La Salle board. "There is a lot of synergy among schools in North Portland," said Matt Powell, president of De La Salle.
