Priests 'dash for cash' at grocery store to help teen center
Published: 2004-08-13
SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- They sprinted -- and in one incident belly-flopped -- up and down the aisles, seizing the largest-ticket items and tossing them into brimming Albertson's shopping carts. As one cart was filled, they ran it to the checkout lanes and grabbed another. In five quick minutes, the "Holy Rollers" had accumulated $14,256 worth of food and small appliances in their carts. In a ceremony following the madcap "Dash for Cash," Charla Giles, Albertson's San Diego area vice president, presented a check for $15,000 to Msgr. Joe Carroll, founder of Father Joe's Villages and the St. Vincent de Paul Center in San Diego. The donated money will be used to build a music and video production center at the Toussaint Teen Center. The Albertsons/Sav-On Drugs Corp. annually contributes millions of dollars to local communities. Last year, the company donated $15.5 million and its employees gave 250,000 volunteer hours to schools, food banks, shelters and other community charities.
