Bishop Kmiec of Nashville named to new post as bishop of Buffalo
Published: 2004-08-12
WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Pope John Paul II has appointed Bishop Edward U. Kmiec of Nashville, Tenn., as bishop of Buffalo, N.Y. Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, apostolic nuncio to the United States, announced the appointment Aug. 12 in Washington. Bishop Kmiec, 68, succeeds Bishop Henry J. Mansell, who was named archbishop of Hartford, Conn., last October. "I am very grateful to the Holy Father for the confidence and trust shown by virtue of His Holiness' choosing me to serve as shepherd of the Diocese of Buffalo," Bishop Kmiec said in a statement. "With hope and trust in God, I look forward to serving this faith community." Bishop Kmiec, 68, has headed the Nashville Diocese since December 1992. Before that he was an auxiliary bishop of Trenton, N.J., his home diocese, for 10 years. In a letter addressed to Nashville Catholics, he said: "With an excitement of the prospect of a new pastoral challenge, there is also a heaviness in my heart that in about two months I will be leaving Nashville, ... and especially leaving you all, the wonderful people of this diocese whom it has been my privilege and joy to serve."
