Actress brings St. Faustina to life with one-woman play

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. (CNS) -- From the age of 6, Nancy Scimone knew that she wanted to be an actress and singer. "I would gather up aunts and uncles and make them be my audience when I put on shows," making up songs on the spot and performing them, she said. Her large family also fostered her strong faith from an early age. "I remember going to church with my mother when she used to clean it and take care of the altar," she told the Catholic Explorer, newspaper of the Joliet Diocese. She was in Illinois to perform the play in July. But the 33-year-old actress never dreamed that her work and her faith would come together in a way that has changed her life. Since August 2001, Scimone has traveled the country putting on her one-woman play, "Saint Faustina -- Messenger of Mercy," about St. Faustina Kowalska, the Polish nun whose visions gave rise to the Divine Mercy devotions. The play takes text from the saint's journal and combines it with several original songs.
