Head of Washington Catholic hospital leaves for new post in Florida
Published: 2004-08-02
WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Sister Carol Keehan was born at Providence Hospital in Washington 60 years ago, was named its president and CEO 15 years ago, and along the way has become a nationally known figure in Catholic health care, especially as an advocate for the poor. Now, the Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul has taken up a new post -- as chairwoman of the board of directors for Sacred Heart Health System in Pensacola, Fla. "I always told people (that I was) not going far in life -- I was still in the hospital I was born in!" said Sister Carol. Providence Hospital was on Capitol Hill when she was born. By the time she became head of the facility, it had moved to the northeastern sector of the city. Under Sister Carol's leadership, Providence expanded its outreach to pregnant women and their newborns through its Center for Life, assumed sponsorship of and opened a new facility for the Carroll Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, and opened neighborhood clinics to serve poor families and individuals throughout the area.
