CINCINNATI (CNS) -- A funeral Mass was celebrated July 28 at St. Xavier Church in Cincinnati for Jesuit Father James E. Hoff, chancellor and former president of Xavier University. Father Hoff, 72, died July 23 at the Jesuit residence on the Xavier campus after a four-month battle with cancer. "Jim Hoff is so loved and admired in the Xavier community that the depth of our sadness is beyond words," said Jesuit Father Michael Graham, current university president, in a statement. "He set the example, academically, spiritually, athletically, in every way, of how to do things right and we will continue to follow his example." Father Hoff was president of Xavier from March 1991 to December 2000 and then served as chancellor until his death.
