DETROIT (CNS) -- Cardinal Adam J. Maida of Detroit left July 29 for Warsaw, Poland, as a member of a U.S. delegation attending the July 30-Aug. 1 commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising during World War II. President Bush July 27 named the cardinal to the delegation lead by U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell. The Warsaw Uprising was an effort by the underground Polish Home Army to liberate Warsaw from the Germans and claim it for the Polish government-in-exile. Although unsuccessful, the 63-day uprising is remembered as the largest operation by partisan, or underground, forces during the Second World War, which lasted from 1939-45. "As an American raised by Polish Catholic parents during World War II, I consider it a great privilege and honor to be among those on hand to commemorate the remarkable courage and solidarity of the Polish nation," Cardinal Maida said before leaving Detroit.
