What I Have Seen and Heard - Archbishop Gregory's Weekly Column

God is our greatest inheritance, pope says at weekly audience

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- God is our greatest inheritance and gives us hope of eternal life, said Pope John Paul II at his weekly general audience. In his reflections on Psalm 16 at the July 28 audience, the pope said that God is our sole refuge on earth and "our only inheritance." The psalmist sings a song of joy of his "allotted portion," which is the Lord, and holds fast to his hopes of eternal life with the Father, said the pope. "The psalmist expresses the firm hope to be saved from death in order to stay close to God," he said. This suggests "a victory over death which ensures eternal intimacy with God," he said. This psalm is reflected in the New Testament concerning the resurrection of Jesus Christ in that he is "raised up" and released "from the throes of death," said the pope. God always will show "the path to life," the "fullness of joy" in his divine presence and "the delights at (his) right hand forever," he said.
