Latino Catholics: Candidate's abortion support doesn't rule out vote
Published: 2004-07-26
WASHINGTON (CNS) -- A national poll shows that slightly more than half of Latino Catholics who are registered voters said they could disagree with a candidate on abortion and still vote for him or her if they agreed with the candidate on other issues. The survey reported that 52 percent said they could vote for such a candidate and 41 percent said that they could not. The results for Catholics were almost the same as the results for all Latino voters, 54 percent of whom said they could vote for such a candidate and 38 percent said that they could not. The national survey was conducted by the Pew Hispanic Center and the Kaiser Family Foundation to report on Latino political views. It was released at a Washington news conference July 22 and was based on telephone interviews with 1,116 Latino registered voters, 61 percent of whom said they were Catholic. The survey was conducted from April 21 to June 9. The margin of error was plus or minus 4.18 percent.
