Pax Christi officials arrested in protest outside Sudanese Embassy
Published: 2004-07-22
WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Seeking to call attention to genocide in western Sudan, two Pax Christi USA officials were arrested outside the Sudanese Embassy to the United States. The July 21 protest was the latest in a series of acts of civil disobedience outside the embassy in Washington. About 20 people have been arrested since the protests began June 29. Dave Robinson, Pax Christi's executive director, and Beatrice Parwatikar, vice chairwoman of the organization's national council, were arrested July 21. Others arrested have included political comedian and civil rights activist Dick Gregory; the Rev. Bob Edgar, a United Methodist minister and general secretary of the National Council of Churches; and U.S. Reps. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., Joseph Hoeffel, D-Pa., and Bobby Rush, D.-Ill. Robinson told Catholic News Service he was concerned by news reports that said some 350,000 people in the Darfur region of Sudan were expected to die unless there was an immediate outpouring of aid from the international community.
