Cardinal Sodano to receive the Path to Peace Award
Published: 2004-07-21
NEW YORK (CNS) -- Archbishop Celestino Migliore, Vatican nuncio to the United Nations, has announced that the 2004 Path to Peace Award will be given to Cardinal Angelo Sodano, Vatican secretary of state. The award is presented annually by the Path to Peace Foundation, an agency headed by the nuncio and established in 1991 to raise funds for projects related to the work of the Vatican's U.N. mission but not included in its budget. In a letter dated July 14 that was sent to foundation supporters, the nuncio said the award would be given in recognition of Cardinal Sodano's "outstanding contribution to the cause of peace on behalf of the Holy See." The award will be presented at a reception Sept. 20 while the cardinal is in New York for a meeting of heads of state and government, Archbishop Migliore said. In U.N. protocol, the Vatican secretary of state ranks as a head of government, equivalent to a prime minister.
