
Archbishop Legare, former CCCB head, dies at age 86

OTTAWA (CNS) -- Archbishop Henri Legare, a former president of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, died July 19 after a long illness. He was 86. Archbishop Legare served as president of the CCCB from 1981 to 1983. He led the northern Canadian Archdiocese of Grouard-McLennan for 24 years, from 1972 until his retirement in 1996. The archdiocese covers the northwest corner of Alberta and extends into the Northwest Territories. Archbishop Marcel Gervais of Ottawa was to celebrate the funeral Mass July 23 at Ottawa's Sacred Heart Church. Born in Willow Bunch, Saskatchewan, Feb. 20, 1918, Henri Legare studied at the University of Ottawa and at the seminary of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate in the Archdiocese of Regina, Saskatchewan. He was ordained an Oblate in 1943.
