Anti-porn advocates criticize free Pittsburgh paper on sexual content
Published: 2004-07-15
PITTSBURGH (CNS) -- The Pittsburgh City Paper bills itself on its front page as "the arts, entertainment and news weekly." Also within the tabloid's pages are advertisements for opposite-sex, same-sex and bisexual dating services, massage parlors, "relaxation therapy," personal ads and sexually oriented chat lines. The City Paper, a member of the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies, is available for free to anyone, including children, from numerous boxes and racks throughout the Pittsburgh area. The paper also features the sexual advice column, "Savage Love," in which questions are asked and answered in graphic terms. Catholic and other anti-porn activists are critical of the paper for allowing such adult content to be so accessible to children. Andy Newman, editor of the City Paper, said he generally feels he is in "the newspaper business and not in the child supervision business."
