College students walk across Northeast to bring message on abortion

Published: 2004-07-14

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (CNS) -- Abortion "is especially personal for us because it's our generation that's being killed," said Emily Bissonnette, a senior at Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio. "One out of every three babies -- one-third of my generation -- has been killed by abortion since 1973," she told The Tablet, newspaper of the Brooklyn Diocese. "The people that should have been our friends, spouses and co-workers are simply not here. "That's one reason our society has so many gaps in it. People who were created by God for a specific purpose aren't fulfilling their promise," she said. Bissonnette is one of 12 college students currently on a "Summer Crusade for Life." Sponsored by the American Life League, the crusade is taking participants 1,300 miles from Augusta, Maine, to Washington. They are bringing a simple message to approximately 200 communities and as many Catholic politicians as will listen: You cannot be both Catholic and be a supporter of keeping abortion legal.
