WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Following an ancient church tradition and accompanied by a proclamation from the mayor of Washington and the applause of family and friends, Father Martin David Holley was ordained July 2 as an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Washington. Nearly 900 people -- including many relatives of the new bishop and representatives of other faiths, including Methodist, Presbyterian and Jewish -- attended the two-and-a-half-hour Mass at Washington's Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle. "Consider that you are chosen from among men and appointed on their behalf for those things that pertain to God," Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick of Washington told Bishop Holley in his homily. "With the charity of a father and brother, love all whom God places in your care, especially the priests and deacons, your co-workers in the ministry of Christ, but also the poor and the weak, immigrants and strangers," he said.
