Two chaplains ordained as auxiliary bishops for military archdiocese
Published: 2004-07-06
WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Joy at the ordination of two new auxiliary bishops for the U.S. Archdiocese for the Military Services was tempered by concerns for an ailing brother-in-law in Ireland, a chaplain wounded in Iraq and military men and women "in harm's way" around the world. The July 3 episcopal ordination of Bishops Richard B. Higgins and Joseph W. Estabrook brought hundreds of Catholics, including Gen. Richard B. Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington. Bishop Higgins, born in Longford, Ireland, and ordained in 1968 as a priest of the Diocese of Sacramento, has been an Air Force chaplain since 1974 and served most recently as chaplain at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. Bishop Estabrook, a priest of the Diocese of Albany, where he was born, has been a Navy chaplain since 1977. He served most recently as command chaplain at Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe Bay. Both new bishops are 60 years old.
