Catholics honored as 'Hunger Heroes' by anti-hunger organization

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Eight Catholic individuals and one Catholic religious order have been honored as "Hunger Heroes" by Bread for the World to mark the national, Christian anti-hunger organization's 30th anniversary this year. In all, 30 recipients were chosen to represent the many thousands of groups and individuals who have given their time, effort and resources to help end hunger in the United States and around the world. The awards were presented June 21 at Bread for the World's 30th anniversary celebration at the National Press Club in Washington. "Movement Building" awards were given to: John Carr, Robert Cahill, Gloria Fitzgerald and Benedictine Sister Christine Vladimiroff. Honored with "Capacity Building" awards for contributing to Bread for the World's growth from 500 to 50,000 members in the last 30 years were: Jesuit Father William J. Byron, Joe Martingale, Sue Toton and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange, Calif. Carlos Navarro was selected to receive an "Advocacy Impact" award for having a major impact on Bread for the World's legislative effectiveness.
