Dallas cathedral to get its long-awaited steeple
Published: 2004-06-22
DALLAS (CNS) -- One hundred seven years after being first envisioned by its original builders the Cathedral Santuario de Guadalupe in Dallas will get its 20-story steeple. Father Ramon Alvarez, rector of the cathedral, confirmed that construction will begin June 28 for the steeple and bell tower, which was originally part of the cathedral's 1898 design but never completed because of a lack of funds, according to a report in the June 18 edition of the Texas Catholic, newspaper of the Dallas Diocese. "Finishing the bell tower is something that every bishop here has thought about. I really think that Bishop Grahmann's dream has been to complete this. It is going to be fulfilled," said Father Alvarez. Bishop Charles V. Grahmann is the sixth bishop of Dallas. It was the diocese's second bishop, Edward Dunne, who began the project in 1898 when he commissioned Texas architect Nicholas Clayton to design the cathedral. Some of Clayton's buildings are now historical landmarks.
