Presidents of Catholic University, NAACP meet on chapter flap

Published: 2004-06-17

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- The presidents of The Catholic University of America and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People met for an hour June 16 to discuss the recent decision by the university's Division of Student Life to reject a student's application to form an NAACP chapter on campus. Vincentian Father David M. O'Connell pledged to revisit the question in the fall when students have returned to campus and to meet personally with students interested in the issue. Kweisi Mfume, NAACP president and CEO, said that unless Father O'Connell reversed the decision promptly he would challenge the university "in the court of law and the court of public opinion." The university's public affairs office said Mfume concurred with Father O'Connell's description of the meeting as "open, full, frank, candid and respectful."
