
Bush nominates Polish-born Catholic woman as ambassador to Estonia

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- President Bush June 8 nominated Dr. Aldona Z. Wos, a Republican fund-raiser and member of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council representing the Polish-American community, to be U.S. ambassador to Estonia. Wos, 49, was born in Warsaw, Poland, and emigrated with her family to the United States when she was 6 years old. Her father helped rescue several Jews during World War II. A Catholic, she is a graduate of Marquette University in Milwaukee and earned her medical degree at the Warsaw Medical Academy. She practiced medicine in New York for 18 years before moving in 1997 to Greensboro, N.C., where she became active in community volunteer work and later in Republican politics. In 2002 she headed Women for Dole in Elizabeth Dole's successful campaign to succeed Jesse Helms as a Republican senator from North Carolina. The following year she was North Carolina finance co-chair for the George W. Bush-Dick Cheney campaign.
