British bishop hopes U.N. resolution helps Iraqi sovereignty
Published: 2004-06-14
LANCASTER, England (CNS) -- A British bishop said he hopes a U.N. resolution on Iraq will lead to the establishment of a stable and sovereign country. Bishop Patrick O'Donoghue of Lancaster said the resolution set the stage for Iraqis to "have the right to control their own destiny." He said, "The Iraqis are a beleaguered and bereaved people, having incurred enormous losses in this and in the first Gulf War. The tensions among the different communities in that country are real but for the Iraqi people themselves to resolve. They, too, will need to seek the way of peace and reconciliation." The U.N. Security Council approved in early June a resolution calling for a return of full sovereignty to Iraq and giving the new government some clout over a U.S.-led multinational force.
