University of St. Thomas in Houston appoints new president
Published: 2004-06-14
HOUSTON (CNS) -- The University of St. Thomas has appointed Robert Ivany as its new president, effective July 1. Ivany, who recently retired as president of the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pa., brings to the university more than 30 years of experience as a U.S. Army officer and a doctorate in modern European history. In a statement he said he was attracted to the Basilian-run university because of its Catholic liberal arts tradition and its diverse student body. He described the school as "an institution that understands the challenges our young people face." Ivany succeeds Joseph McFadden, who began his second stint as president last year after Pope John Paul II appointed then-Father J. Michael Miller, president for six and a half years, as secretary of the Congregation for Catholic Education. The pope also made the Basilian priest an archbishop.
