New Catholic university planned for San Diego

Published: 2004-06-04

SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- A new Catholic university with a focus on business, technology and media is set to open in 2006 in San Diego. The university, currently named New Catholic University, though it could be renamed at the discretion of a major donor, describes itself as "uncompromisingly" and "unapologetically" Catholic. Derry Connolly, president of the school and chairman of its board of trustees, said the university differs from other Catholic universities because of its emphasis on innovation and entrepreneurship. "We will be training students to become future leaders who are first and foremost on fire for their faith," he told Catholic News Service in a telephone interview. Connolly said the initial phase of the school is going well and it has gained a number of supporters, but added that the greatest challenge right now is fund raising.
