Catholic University turns down request for NAACP chapter on campus

Published: 2004-06-04

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Even though the spring semester and college graduations are over, the campus of The Catholic University of America in Washington is hardly quiet. The school currently is the focus of a debate over its decision to prevent students from forming an NAACP chapter. Opponents of the decision held a press conference June 4 on a street corner just across from Catholic University's campus in front of a barrage of placards for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. William Jawando, the student who tried to form the student campus group, told the few dozen observers and reporters at the street-side press conference that he did not intend to "bad-mouth" Catholic University, where he said he received a good education. He attended Catholic University for four years and is entering the school's law school this fall. But Jawando said he was "disappointed with the response they've given me." "All we want to do is the work of civil rights," he added.
