CHICAGO (CNS) -- The 47-member Council of Religious Leaders of Metropolitan Chicago is the recipient of the 2004 Peacemakers Award from the Catholic Theological Union of Chicago. The award honors the vision, courage and collaboration the council has demonstrated in speaking out and taking action on issues of injustice, hatred and intolerance in Chicago and beyond, according to a press release from the Catholic Theological Union. Previous winners of the Peacemakers Award include Steven Spielberg for the Shoah Foundation in 2003 and Cardinal Walter Kasper of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity in 2002. "There are few if any more significant and active ecumenical and interfaith organizations to be found in the United States," said Passionist Father Donald Senior, president of the Catholic Theological Union. "At a moment when world tensions are increasing, and there are sharp divides along religious and ethnic lines, the council -- with its representation of Jewish, Christian and Muslim leadership -- witnesses to a spirit of mutual respect, understanding and collaborative efforts in the pursuit of the common good."
