WASHINGTON (CNS) -- The bishop-publishers of the six diocesan editions of The Florida Catholic were honored with the 2004 Bishop John England Award at the Catholic Press Association's annual convention in Washington. "The bishops who form the partnership of The Florida Catholic ... are to be commended for their actions in 2003 in defense of their publication and in utilizing the newspaper to further the spread of information to their flocks," said Dennis Heaney, president of The Christophers and outgoing CPA president, who announced the award May 26. The award went to Archbishop John C. Favalora of Miami; Bishop Norbert M. Dorsey of Orlando; Bishop Gerald M. Barbarito of Palm Beach and his predecessor, now-Archbishop Sean P. O'Malley of Boston; Bishop John H. Ricard of Pensacola-Tallahassee; Bishop Robert N. Lynch of St. Petersburg; and Bishop John J. Nevins of Venice. Heaney said the bishops were being honored "for their bold approach to a problem at the newspaper and for their continued commitment to using The Florida Catholic to communicate effectively good news and bad to their flocks."
