WASHINGTON (CNS) -- La Voz Catolica, Spanish-language newspaper of the Archdiocese of Miami, won the Catholic Press Association's general excellence award for Spanish-language publications. In calling it "a first-class publication" and an "exceptional winner," judges cited La Voz Catolica's "excellent coverage of high journalistic quality, on par with the best 'secular' newspaper." La Voz Catolica had won general excellence awards in 1993 and 1999. El Centinela, Spanish-language newspaper of the Archdiocese of Portland, Ore., finished in a second-place tie with Chicago Catolico, Spanish-language newspaper of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Last year's general excellence winner, El Pregonero, Spanish-language newspaper of the Archdiocese of Washington, took third place this year. Honorable mentions went to El Pueblo Catolico, Spanish-language newspaper of the Archdiocese of Denver, and Revista Maryknoll, published by the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers in Maryknoll, N.Y.
