
Paterson Bishop Rodimer resigns; Newark auxiliary appointed successor

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Pope John Paul II has accepted the resignation of Bishop Frank J. Rodimer of Paterson, N.J. The pope appointed Newark Auxiliary Bishop Arthur J. Serratelli as the new bishop of Paterson. The announcement was made June 1 in Washington by Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, apostolic nuncio. Bishop Serratelli was appointed auxiliary bishop of Newark in 2000. At his episcopal ordination that September, he said he would "gladly offer my life for the Gospel and the church." He is chairman of the U.S. bishops' Ad Hoc Committee on Review of Scripture Translations. He is a member of the bishops' Committee on Doctrine, Committee on Women in Society and in the Church, Committee on the American College of Louvain, and the Ad Hoc Committee for the Spanish Language Bible.
