WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Gerald M. Costello, founding editor of two diocesan newspapers and former president of The Christophers, is the winner of the 2004 St. Francis de Sales Award, the highest honor given to an individual by the Catholic Press Association. The award, presented annually for "outstanding contributions to Catholic journalism," was announced May 28 by Owen McGovern, CPA executive director, at a luncheon on the last day of the CPA convention in Washington. "Jerry's service and his work have been admirable, courageous and filled with the spirit of St. Francis de Sales under the guidance of the Holy Spirit," McGovern said, reading excerpts from the nomination form about Costello. Costello was founding editor of The Beacon in the Diocese of Paterson, N.J., and Catholic New York in the Archdiocese of New York and served for three years as president of The Christophers on an interim basis.
