RICHMOND, Va. (CNS) -- Amid a prolonged standing ovation, Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo beamed at the overflowing crowd as he took possession of the bishop's chair of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart during the installation liturgy May 24. The new 12th bishop of Richmond was led to the chair by Cardinal William H. Keeler of Baltimore, who had served as apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Richmond since Bishop Walter F. Sullivan retired last September. The 62-year-old Bishop DiLorenzo had been bishop of Honolulu since 1994. "This is a moment of great joy for me as my job as apostolic administrator is about to evaporate," Cardinal Keeler quipped. Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, apostolic nuncio to the United States, read the proclamation of Pope John Paul II which gave the official appointment of Bishop DiLorenzo as bishop of Richmond. The appointment had been announced March 31.
