WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Pope John Paul II has accepted the resignations of two auxiliary bishops in Newark, N.J., and named two new auxiliaries for the archdiocese. The two bishops who are retiring are Auxiliary Bishop David Arias, 74, and Auxiliary Bishop Charles J. McDonnell, 75. The new bishops are Msgr. Thomas A. Donato, spiritual director at Immaculate Conception Seminary in South Orange, N.J., and Msgr. John W. Flesey, director of ongoing formation for priests of the Newark Archdiocese. Both also recently were named pastors, posts they will continue to hold as bishops. The changes were announced May 21 in Washington by Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, apostolic nuncio to the United States. Bishops-designate Donato and Flesey will be ordained bishops Aug. 4 at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark.
