
Archbishop O'Meara awards for reporting on missions announced

NEW YORK (CNS) -- Diocesan newspapers in Kansas, New York and Pennsylvania took top honors in the 2004 Archbishop Edward T. O'Meara journalism awards competition, the Society for the Propagation of the Faith announced May 19. The awards, recognizing excellence in reporting on the church's worldwide missionary work in diocesan newspapers and Catholic magazines, were to be presented May 27 during the Catholic Press Association convention in Washington. Reporter Monte Mace from The Leaven newspaper in Kansas City, Kan., received first-place honors in the "visits to the missions" category for his article profiling a Sister of Charity who spent 40 years as a missionary in Peru. The Catholic Sun in Syracuse, N.Y., took first place in "interviews with missionaries" for Eileen Jevis' story of a Marianist brother's work with AIDS orphans in Malawi. The North County Catholic in Ogdensburg, N.Y., was awarded first place for "mission news" articles by Mary Lou Kilian about that diocese's ending its 40-year mission in Peru. Bruce A. Tomaselli of The Catholic Register, diocesan newspaper in Altoona-Johnstown, Pa., won top honors in the "mission series" category for his article and photographs about life and faith in Jamaica.
