Canadian bishops to examine relationship with pro-life politicians
Published: 2004-05-18
OTTAWA (CNS) -- The Canadian bishops' conference plans an in-depth study into the church's relationship with Catholic politicians and others who run afoul of church teaching on issues like abortion, euthanasia and same-sex marriage. The study will be conducted after the upcoming general election, expected at the end of June. In the meantime, it is business as usual, said Deacon Bill Kokesch, English-sector communications director for the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops. "Nothing has changed," he said May 17. "We always looked at this as being the responsibility of the local ordinary to decide." But he said that after the election is over, the bishops' conference intends to have a "more in-depth study on the whole interface between Catholics and the political process, not only with politicians but also with other Catholics."
