Nun who taught Dominican baseball players receives Canadian honor
Published: 2004-05-17
OTTAWA (CNS) -- Over the past 45 years, Sister Lenore Gibb taught many award-winning Major League Baseball players. But on May 14 it was her turn to be a winner. Sister Gibb, a missionary from Pembroke, Ontario, and a member of the Grey Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, was one of 44 people invested into the Order of Canada, the country's highest honor for lifetime achievement. In 1959, Sister Gibb and a colleague opened a school in a poor sugar cane district of the Dominican Republic. Since then, she has been a catalyst for the construction of numerous modern facilities, including several schools, a home for the elderly, a cultural center and a housing project for teachers and their families, said the citation from Governor-General Adrienne Clarkson, who presented the medals. The citation said Sister Gibb was "persistent and determined" and that she helped improve the quality of life for countless members of her adopted community.
