Archbishop calls for acceleration of Northern Ireland police reform
Published: 2004-05-14
LONDON (CNS) -- An Irish archbishop called on the British government to accelerate policing reform in Northern Ireland in order to establish trust with the Catholic community. Archbishop Sean Brady of Armagh, Northern Ireland, said one area where the British government is responsible for increasing the sense of distrust among Catholics is "the endless allegations of collusion between the security services in Britain, the security forces in Northern Ireland and loyalist paramilitaries." Archbishop Brady said, "This is an area for which only the British government can take responsibility." In a May 5 speech at St. Ethelburga's Center for Peace and Reconciliation in London, Archbishop Brady said many nationalist areas in Northern Ireland "are crying out for effective policing."
