Oregon Catholics work for better relations between church, unions
Published: 2004-05-13
PORTLAND, Ore. (CNS) -- One group of Oregon Catholics wants the church and labor unions to regain the relationship the two institutions once had of working together to improve the lot of the nation's working class. Several times each year, Portland religious leaders and unions team up on events meant to stake out common ground. Around Labor Day, Portland Jobs with Justice offers workers' stories pastors can use in the pulpits or at coffee and doughnuts after Mass. A breakfast to build relationships between labor and faith also has become an annual event. "We're the body of Christ. It is only when the body works as a whole that things get accomplished in a way that does not hurt any part of the body," said Father Don Buxman, pastor of Christ the King Parish in Milwaukie. "This is why we as a church need to be involved."
