Sixth-grader spearheads food collection at parish, school

Published: 2004-05-13

TRENTON, N.J. (CNS) -- Earlier this year, when sixth-grader Michael Aneser saw a lot of empty shelves at the food pantry of the Catholic Charities' Emergency Services building in Trenton, he felt compelled to do something. He and his mom, Vickey, had stopped at the center to drop off some donations, and he noticed about 20 grocery bags each held only two food items and five diapers. On the way home he asked his mom if he could use the $50 that he had saved from his allowance to buy some food for the emergency services program, but she suggested that he think instead about starting a food collection. Michael wrote to his pastor, Father Ralph Stansley of Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in West Trenton, and his school principal, Sister Margaret Fagan at Incarnation School in Trenton. He described the depleted supply of food and other items at the Catholic Charities' facility and asked if his parish and school communities could help.
