Forgiveness indispensable to building peace after war, panelists say
Published: 2004-05-05
WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Reconciliation and forgiveness are indispensable elements to building peace after war and conflict, said panelists at a Washington symposium. The purpose of the panel was to discuss ways in which a "forgiveness-based strategy" of conflict resolution could help heal international or intergroup conflicts. The panel also was held to help launch the book, "Forgiveness in International Politics: An Alternative Road to Peace," published by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. The book was an outgrowth of a series of dialogues on the role forgiveness plays in politics. The dialogues, which began in 1995, were sponsored by the Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University in Washington and the U.S. bishops' Office of International Justice and Peace.
