
Bishop Harrison, retired head of Syracuse Diocese, dies at 91

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (CNS) -- Retired Bishop Frank J. Harrison, the first Syracuse native to be ordained a bishop there, died May 1 at St. Camilla's Rehabilitation Center in Syracuse. He was 91. He was the seventh bishop of Syracuse, serving from 1977 until his retirement in 1987. Before that he was a Syracuse auxiliary bishop, 1971-77. His funeral Mass was scheduled for 11 a.m. May 7 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Syracuse, followed by burial in St. Agnes Cemetery. Bishop Harrison was known for his simple lifestyle, his reorganization and expansion of diocesan services, his interest in matters of peace, justice and human dignity, and his support for lay ministers in the Catholic Church.
