U.S. cardinals gather in Twin Cities to aid Catholic University
Published: 2004-04-27
ST. PAUL, Minn. (CNS) -- The last time there was such a presence of the U.S. Catholic hierarchy in the Twin Cities was 1941 for the Eucharistic Congress, held in St. Paul. On April 23, five of America's Catholic cardinals concelebrated Mass in the Cathedral of St. Paul and later were joined that evening by a sixth cardinal to be a part of a fund-raising dinner in Minneapolis for college scholarships benefiting The Catholic University of America in Washington. Also present was Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, the pope's representative in the United States. The cardinals' dinner, which used to rotate among archdioceses headed by U.S. cardinals, took place for a second straight year in a diocese with no cardinal as its shepherd. Last year's Mass and dinner took place in the San Francisco Archdiocese, and next year's fund-raising event will be in the Miami Archdiocese. During the $1,000-per-plate dinner, Archbishop Harry J. Flynn of St. Paul-Minneapolis pointed out to the 550 people in attendance that Minnesota has longtime ties to the university, founded by the U.S. bishops in 1887.
